Almost 2,000 years ago, Ptolemy, one of history’s greatest mathematicians, thought he had the universe thing pretty much figured out.

He determined that the earth was at the center of it all, and I’m sure he felt pretty damn good about himself.

People praised him for his superior intellect, wisdom and oneness with the heavens. Word spread quick, and his theory of the universe quickly became the status quo, unarguable, the truth.

Yep, for about 1,400 years people thought that the geocentric model was the bees knees. For those who aren’t space buffs, that means that the earth is in the center of everything and all things revolve around it.

*Spoiler alert: it got seriously debunked. I hope you already knew that.

Geocentric hoopla however, was not mankind’s first intellectual face-plant. As a matter of fact, the world has been exceptionally good at accepting bizarre things as truth far longer than they should have.

For example; blood-letting, not washing your hands, tobacco enemas for curing your sickness, and that gin was a great cure for indigestion (humans are really smart).

You might be thinking, “that was then, we are far superior nowadays.” Are we though? We talk a big game but still subscribe to some random thoughts and practices.

Which brings me to my main point, my magnum opus, my grassy knoll, the hill I’ll die on: Employee wellness as a historically undervalued social determinant of health.

Needless to say, Ptolemy was wrong, but that didn’t stop generations of people from believing he was right. Likewise, employee performance and wellbeing has been written off, managed under the guise of obsolete systems and practices for too long. News flash, the future has arrived and its name is LEON.

500 years ago, our namesake, Ponce de Leon, was gallivanting across the Caribbean in search of the fountain of youth. He didn’t know it then, but somewhere down the line, we’d actually figure out the secret to living long, happy, and fulfilling lives.
